Tatarstan President visits Minsk Cathedral Mosque

December 12,   2019

President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov visited the Minsk Cathedral Mosque today as part of a two-day working visit to the Republic of Belarus.

Minsk Cathedral Mosque is the main spiritual center of Belarusian Muslims. The opening of the mosque took place in 2016. The building was built in the image of the now lost Minsk stone mosque, which was erected more than 100 years ago. Today, during the festive services, the cathedral mosque can receive up to 2 thousand believers.

Mufti Abu-Bekir Shabanovich told Rustam Minnikhanov about the history of the Muslim community of Belarus and the activities of the Muslim religious association, and also conducted an orientation tour of the mosque. In addition to the prayer hall, there is a library, classrooms, a conference room and a museum of the history of Islam.

“It looks very reputable. Unique building in architecture and content. Moreover, it is very functional, ”Rustam Minnikhanov noted at the end of the seeing.

The President of the Republic of Tatarstan also congratulated Abu-Bekir Shabanovich on his anniversary – this year the mufti turned 80 years old. Rustam Minnikhanov presented a special edition of the Koran as a gift to the mosque.
