21.03. 2018

The International Day of Nowruz is celebrated since 2010. Several governments;  Azerbaijan, Albania, Afghanistan, Macedonia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey proposed the introduction of a new date into the UN calendar.

On February 23, the General Assembly adopted the initiative of these countries and consolidated the international holiday – Nowruz Day –  March 21. Nowruz is a New Year’s holiday for a number of Eurasian peoples, and it also marks the 1st day of spring and the renewal of nature. The holiday is rooted in the pre-literary era of human history.

According to the ancient custom, on the eve of Nowruz, people should clean up their homes, put things in order in yards and vegetable gardens and pay off their debts. On the festive table, usually spread round cakes of wheat, barley, millet, corn and other cereals. In Nowruz  it is customary to cook dishes from 7 products (mostly of vegetable origin).

In 2009 Nowruz  was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The UN believes that the holiday promotes the values of peace and solidarity both between generations and within the family, as well as reconciliation and good neighborliness.
