Minnikhanov visits Tatar mosque in Urumchi

April 15, in the framework of his visit to China, President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov visited one of the oldest and largest mosques in Urumchi – the administrative center of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China.

Urumchi is a place of the traditional residence of the Uighurs, Tatars , and other Muslim representatives.

Tatar mosque is considered one of the oldest in Urumchi. It was built in 1897 with funds raised by local Tatar Diaspora.

By the beginning of XX century, the mosque turned into a religious complex with a total area of 3 thousand square meters.

This is one of the biggest mosques of the city, which can accommodate more than a thousand believers, the press office of the President of Tatarstan informs. In the mosque, Rustam Minnikhanov met with the Tatars, living in Urumch. He talked about how to maintain and develop the Islamic culture and traditions in the city.

“For us, it is a joy to come here to meet you, visit this wonderful mosque ” – Rustam Minnikhanov addressed to Urumchi Tatars.
