Tatar community of St. Petersburg paid tribute to the poet-warrior Musa Jalil

Monument to the Tatar poet and Hero of the Soviet Union Musa Jalil was opened in St. Petersburg May 19, 2011, and is a gift from the Republic of Tatarstan, St. Petersburg. The place was not chosen by chance: during the Great Patriotic War Musa Jalil near Leningrad at the Leningrad and Volkhov front in the rank of the senior political officer served as a war correspondent for the newspaper “Muzhestvo (Courage)” in 1942 was taken prisoner, and then to a concentration camp. Being a part of the Volga-Tatar Legion “Idel-Ural”, he became a member of the underground organization. After the underground arresting, he was executed on the guillotine August 25, 1944 in Ploetzensee in Berlin.
