The museum housed within Kazan’s Al-Marjani Mosque welcomed its first visitors during the BRICS summit

The museum space, located within Kazan’s Al-Marjani Mosque, commenced operations during the BRICS summit. Now, Kazan residents and visitors to the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan can explore the history of Tatarstan’s oldest mosque and its community, from its founding to the present day.

One exhibition is dedicated to the renowned imam, Tatar Muslim theologian and educator Shigabutdin Marjani, who served at the mosque from 1850 to 1889. Personal belongings, manuscripts, rare books, and unique photographs and video materials pertaining to the mosque’s history are on display. The museum also provides an overview of Islam and its rituals.

Each of the three halls is equipped with interactive displays, while the fourth hall houses a Muslim library.

The restoration of the mosque and the creation of the museum were made possible through the support of Rustam Minnikhanov, President of the Republic of Tatarstan. The Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage oversaw the project’s progress, according to the department’s website.
