Wrestling “Kuresh” has its deepest roots, and along with the customs, rites and traditions, it is a part of the national culture of the Tatar people.

On the territory of Russia in the areas where Tatars, from time immemorial, celebrated the national festival “Sabantuy,” a central place at the event took the wrestling “Kuresh.” The manuscripts of 922 describe the Tatar national festival. Among many popular games there, there are references to a competition in wrestling. This wrestling is considered to be a national sport, it has a long history and is very popular among the peoples of the

Volga, the Urals and other regions in Russia and abroad.

In order to popularize the sport, at the initiative of the World Congress of Tatars, by the decision of the founding conference attended by delegates from 57 subjects of the Russian Federation, on April 15, 2005, the Federation of National Wrestling “Tatarcha Kuresh” of Russia was founded. January 19, 2006 it was registered by the Ministry of Justice as the All-Russia public organization.

Since 2005, national and international competitions are held by All-Russia Federation of National Wrestling “Tatarcha Kuresh.”

It became a tradition to hold annual Federal Sabantui, the geography of regions developing wrestling “Kuresh” expanded.

The Federation engages in propaganda of the Tatar national wrestling in Russia, and is developing social protection of athletes, veterans of national sports and other forms of wrestling. It also provides support and assistance to sports organizations in Russia to create material and technical basis to practice the Tatar national wrestling.
