On January 27, the exhibition “At the Crossroads of Cultures: The Legacy of Kayum Nasyri” will open at the Sviyazhsk History Museum.
The exhibition, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Tatar scholar and educator, will be formally opened at the Sviyazhsk History Museum, one of the unique museums in the Republic of Tatarstan.
Kayum Nasyri (1825-1902) was a figure who left an indelible mark on the history of Tatar science, literature, and culture. Born in the village of Verkhniye Shirdeny in the Sviyazhsk district (now Malyye Shirdeny village in the Zelenodolsk district of the Republic of Tatarstan), he became a symbol of the intellectual and cultural revival of the Tatar people. His contributions spanned a wide range of scientific disciplines, including linguistics, mathematics, botany, and literature.
The exhibition “At the Crossroads of Cultures” offers a unique opportunity to explore both lifetime and modern editions of Kayum Nasyri’s works from the collection of the N.I. Lobachevsky Scientific Library of Kazan Federal University. The exhibits include printed calendars, textbooks on arithmetic and geometry, botanical guides, dictionaries, and even the first book on the history of Russia in the Tatar language. Special attention is given to reprints and collected works of Kayum Nasyri from the 20th and 21st centuries, reflecting the continued interest in his legacy.
The exhibition will also showcase Kayum Nasyri’s contribution to cultural dialogue. He not only helped develop the literary language but also published dictionaries of Russian for Tatars and Tatar for Russians, highlighting the ethnographic features of Kazan Tatars.
