Around 58,000 schoolchildren in Tatarstan are educated in the Tatar language

In Tatarstan, 591 schools operate with the Tatar language as the native language of instruction, alongside the teaching of certain subjects in Russian. These schools educate over 82,000 students, more than 57,800 of whom are taught in their native Tatar language. This information is provided in the 2024 annual performance report of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan.

“In the 2024/2025 academic year, there are 1,402 general education institutions operating in the republic,” the report of the Tatarstan Government states.

There are 880 educational institutions in the republic with Russian as the language of instruction, where more than 434,500 children are enrolled. Additionally, 124 schools feature an ethno-cultural component in their curricula, including the study of the Chuvash, Udmurt, Mari, Mordovian (Moksha and Erzya) languages, as well as Hebrew.

More than 193,900 children in Tatarstan attend over 1,900 preschool educational institutions. Out of these, 711 kindergartens provide upbringing and instruction in the Tatar language, attended by 27,100 children.

In 653 Russian-Tatar kindergartens, approximately 1,400 Tatar-speaking groups have been established, serving more than 24,900 children.

“The share of children receiving upbringing and education in their native (non-Russian) language across the republic is 55.6%,” the report notes.

The report on the activities of the Cabinet of Ministers for the past year will be presented at the ninth session of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan of the seventh convocation on April 18, as reported by Tatar-inform.
