In 2025, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Garif Akhunov, Tatar national writer, public figure, and Honored Artist of the RSFSR, will be celebrated.
Garif Akhunov was born on September 18, 1925, in the village of Kechkene Uchili, Arsky district, into a large peasant family. He received his primary education in the village school of Kazanbash and later studied at the Arsk Pedagogical College. In 1947, he entered the Faculty of History and Philology at Kazan State University.
Akhunov became part of literary circles during his final years at university and began publishing in 1951. His first major work, “The Joy of Youth”, depicted the life of students in the 1950s. From the very beginning of his creative career, Akhunov sought to portray the spirit of his time. His works featured contemporaries, oil workers, rural laborers, and industrial leaders. For his novel about Tatarstan’s oil workers “The Treasure” (Khäzinä) and his novella “The Kernel of a Nut”, he was awarded the G. Tukay State Prize of the TASSR.
Garif Akhunov was known not only as a writer, but also as a playwright, translator, editor, public and political figure.
The exhibition “Garif Akhunov. Family Treasure” will showcase items from the personal archive of the Akhunov family that were dear to the writer — family objects and photographs, personal books, as well as paintbrushes and a painting. The intimate exhibition presents Garif Akhunov as a multifaceted personality: a writer and literary critic, an artist, and a loving family man.
The exhibition will run from September 11 to October 12. As part of the public program, guided tours and a screening of the film “The Treasure” will be held.
