Press Release
From 14 to 16 November, the worldwide educational campaign “Tatarcha diktant” will take place across the globe. The initiative aims to assess literacy levels in the Tatar language and promote the use and preservation of the mother tongue. This large-scale event brings together thousands of people who care about the Tatar language: schoolchildren, students, teachers, scholars, cultural and educational figures, journalists, creative professionals, as well as representatives of other nationalities who study Tatar and treat it with respect.
The campaign is voluntary and free of charge, and is held simultaneously for all those wishing to participate in various cities across Russia and worldwide. Anyone can take part regardless of age, gender, education, religion, profession, family status, or interests.
The project is implemented in accordance with the State Program of the Republic of Tatarstan “Preservation of the National Identity of the Tatar People,” approved by Resolution No. 730 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan on 25 August 2020. It is aimed at addressing the goal “Preservation and development of the native language, culture, and traditions of the Tatar people” (Section IV).
The “Tatarcha diktant” (“Tatar Dictation”) campaign was first held in 2016 on the initiative of the World Forum of Tatar Youth and creative Tatar activists.
Its main goal is the preservation and popularization of the Tatar language among the general public, improving literacy, sparking interest in learning Tatar, as well as strengthening national self-awareness and the cultural identity of the Tatar people.
While in its early years the campaign was held only in Tatarstan and a few regions, in recent years it has developed into a major international project, uniting compatriots living in the Republic of Tatarstan, other regions of the Russian Federation, and abroad.
In recent years the campaign has significantly expanded its geographical reach. Today it is conducted with the participation of compatriots living in 31 countries and 74 regions of the Russian Federation.
All districts of the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as universities, schools, and various organizations in Kazan, make great efforts to attract the widest possible audience, so that everyone who wishes may test their knowledge of the Tatar language and connect with their cultural heritage.
Each year the number of participants grows: thousands of people assess their level of Tatar language proficiency both at in-person venues and online.
