From February 25 to 27, Kazan will host the All-Russian scientific conference “Jalil Readings,” dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the poet-hero Musa Jalil. The organizers are the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication of Kazan Federal University (KFU).
The project contributes to achieving the goals and objectives of the national project “Youth and Children”.
The tradition of the “Jalil Readings” dates back to the 1960s. Initially, they were held at Kazan University, but after a certain break, they were revived by the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Musa Jalil Memorial Apartment Museum.
The grand opening and plenary discussion will take place on February 26 in the assembly hall of the Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication (IFMK) KFU (2 Tatarstan St.), starting at 10:00 AM. A special presentation of the original Moabit Notebooks from the collection of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan will be held.

Participants in the readings include museum specialists, historians, literary scholars, representatives of research centers and educational institutions. They will discuss Jalil’s literary legacy in the context of 20th–21st-century culture, the role of social sciences and humanities in preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War, issues of actualizing and transmitting the memory of the war and heroic deeds, the importance of museums in preserving and presenting the memorial heritage of wartime events, the evolution of Russia’s search movement from the first detachments to the All-Russian Information and Search Center, and the reflection of the war theme in works of art.
Within the framework of the conference, 3 sections on different topics will operate:
-
The first section is dedicated to Jalil’s literary legacy and its influence on culture. It will be held at IFMK KFU.
-
The second section, which will take place at the Musa Jalil Memorial Apartment Museum (17 Gorky St.), concerns museum activities and raises issues of transmitting and actualizing wartime and heroic events, as well as the necessity of preserving historical memory.
-
The third section is dedicated to the emergence and development of the search movement in Russia. It will be held in the Administrative Offices (Prisutstvennye mesta) of the Kazan Kremlin. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the first expedition of Tatarstan search teams to the “Death Valley” – the area near the village of Myasnoy Bor in the Novgorod region, where the Second Shock Army repeatedly attempted to break out of encirclement and fierce battles took place. It was there, in the summer of 1942, that Musa Jalil was taken prisoner.
During the conference, a traveling exhibition titled “Musa Jalil: Ascension to the Heroic Deed,” created by the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan, will be on display in the IFMK KFU building. It presents photographs and documents from the collection of the National Museum of Tatarstan, supplemented with excerpts from his poems. Typical items from the era are also on display, and videos with additional material are accessible via QR codes.
Specially for the conference participants, tours at the Musa Jalil Memorial Apartment Museum will be conducted by schoolchildren – museum volunteers. This will provide an opportunity to see Jalil through the eyes of children.
