On the 1st day of the month of Dhu al-Qa’dah (April 29), the staff of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan (DUM RT) and students from the Muhammadiyah Madrasah and the Madrasah named after the 1000th Anniversary of the Adoption of Islam organized a community cleanup (subbotnik) at the Novo-Tatar Cemetery in Kazan.
Purpose and Significance
Employees and imams of DUM RT, along with teachers and students from the madrasahs, carried out extensive maintenance and beautification work on the cemetery grounds. This year’s subbotnik was organized as part of the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland and was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Participants cleaned and cared for the graves of war veterans and religious figures, removing fallen branches, leaves, debris, and overgrowth accumulated over the winter.
Why the Novo-Tatar Cemetery?
DUM RT deliberately chose the Novo-Tatar Cemetery for this initiative. On May 2, it will host the traditional Day of Remembrance of Mentors.
More than 50 prominent religious figures, scholars, and educators of the Muslim world are buried at this cemetery. Among them are: Shihabuddin Marjani, Galiemjan Barudi, Ahmadkhadi Maksudi, Sungatulla Bikbulatov, Zakaria Minvaleev, Gabdulkhak Hazrat Samatov, Ahmadzaki Hazrat Safiullin and many others.
At the end of the cleanup, the participants offered a du’a (supplication) for the souls of the deceased.
