On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the picturesque Yelabuga Settlement will host the 4th All-Russian Traditional Archery Tournament “Tugan Batyr”. The event is organized by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan (DUM RT), the muhtasibat of Yelabuga and Yelabuga District, the administration of the city and district of Yelabuga, the Yelabuga State Museum-Reserve, the national-tourism complex Tugan Avylym (Kazan), the ANO for the development of horseback and traditional archery of the Republic of Bashkortostan “Mergen Uksy”, the “MAKSAT” sports club (Yelabuga), the Archery Federation of the Russian Federation, and the Ministry of Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The tournament aims to promote archery as a sport, preserve the historical, cultural, and folkloric heritage of peoples, and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The competition is open to both men and women over the age of 16 with archery skills, as well as youth aged 10 to 15 who will compete in a separate category. Archers from all regions of Russia and abroad are welcome. The core values of the tournament include tolerance, mutual respect, fostering a friendly atmosphere, and encouraging sportsmanship.
This year, the tournament will consist of eight stages, including a new event — the “Jamby” stage. Disciplines will include horseback shooting, kneeling shooting, biathlon, attack, classic stance shooting, speed shooting, Turkish “puta,” and “jamby.”
Notably, in the “Jamby” stage, participants must shoot at a disk 30 cm in diameter and 20 cm thick, suspended 1.5 meters above the ground. The distance between the archers and the disk is 30 meters, and teams consist of two archers each.
Participation has grown steadily over the years:
-
65 archers in the first tournament
-
75 in the second
-
90 in the third
This growth reflects increasing interest in this traditional sport and cultural heritage. This year, even more participants are expected from regions including Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, Dagestan, Astrakhan and Samara regions, Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
The Yelabuga Settlement, chosen as the tournament venue, is known for its rich history and distinctive atmosphere. It is part of the ancient Bulgar mosque, a 10th-century architectural monument, adding a layer of historical depth and significance to the event.
Importantly, a collective midday prayer (namaz) will be held at the site of the ancient mosque during the tournament.
Additionally, the day will feature a craft fair, interactive zones, and master classes, offering every visitor the chance to experience and engage with ancient traditions.
