“The sick will not die” – the Tomsk Candidate of Sciences published a book of proverbs by   Siberian Tatars

The senior researcher of the Institute of Problems of Development of the North of the SB RAS in Tomsk, the candidate of historical sciences Gulsifa Bakieva published a collection of Proverbs and Sayings by the Siberian Tatars, correspondent of Sib.fm on February 19 acquainted with several sharp  phrases by the ancient people published in the publishing house “Science of Siberia” and chose 15 the most interesting of them.

Studying proverbs and sayings, ethnologists understand the history of this people, its religion, customs and morals. According to the publication by «Science of Siberia»,  the senior researcher of the Institute of Problems of Development of the North of the SB RAS, the  candidate of historical sciences Gulsifa Bakiyeva studied more than four hundred proverbs collected during long-term expeditions to the places of compact residence of the largest group of    Siberian Tatars in the south of the Tyumen region. She published a collection of Proverbs and Sayings by  Siberian Tatars, which published more than 400 samples of folk wisdom.

“For 20 years we have been witnessing a change in the culture of the Siberian Tatars. However, some elements of national holidays, traditional food, funeral rites remain the same as they were 100, 200 years ago, ”   cite  the words by Gulsifa Bakiyeva   in the publishing house”Science in Siberia. ”

  1. “The sick will not die, the one who destined  dies”. Siberian Tatars inherent fatalism: they believe in fate and the fact that everything in life is predetermined.
  1. “The guest will come, let the meat cook; if meat is not cooking, let your face turn red. ” Hospitality was highly valued by the people.
  1. “Three days – a guest, after – a dog”. However, to neglect hospitality is not worth it. Having been detained for a long time at a party, you distract the hosts from their daily work.
  1. “I went to the wedding with an unborn horse”. Siberian Tatars condemned gossip and bragging.
  1. “The own wife will fill the soul, from a dissolute woman, you will cough up blood.” A family for Siberian Tatars is one of the main values ​​of life. Everything that prevents well-being, including treason, is strongly condemned.
  1. “Son of a son is sweeter than honey.” Children for a traditional Tatar family – this is the real wealth. They are pampered, loved and compared to light and sweets.
  1. “The Stupid will sell his father.” If the child grows stupid, he will not achieve success in life, then this is a grief for the parents.
  1. “Under the feet of mothers – paradise.” Veneration of parents in the Tatar family is the responsibility of children.
  2. “Snow falls on the postponed business”. Siberian Tatars appreciate hard work and condemn laziness – many sayings and proverbs are devoted to this. They condemn inability or unwillingness to work.
  1. “The poor have no friends, no enemies.” It was not easy for many Siberian families to get a livelihood. Therefore, they have more sayings and proverbs about poverty than wealth.
  1. “If the rich dresses up – bear to health, if the poor puts on – where did he get it from?” Poor people often complained about the condition of life, hunger and lack of clothing.
  1. “Do not be ashamed of poverty at a funeral and giving your daughter in marriage.” At the same time, Siberian Tatars believed that one should not be ashamed of his poverty.
  1. “It is better to be hungry, but calm.” Poor people are advised to work and try to get out of poverty – well, or just accept their financial situation.
  1. “Do not ask a fool for time.” Siberian Tatars respected knowledge and ridiculed ignorance. The proverb warns that one does not need to deal with stupid people.
  1. “Do not look for a friend without a flaw – you will remain alone.” Friendship and teamwork were important for the people, so they often call in their proverbs to patiently treat each other.

We remind  that in November 2017, Tomsk philologists were going to create an online encyclopedia about the verbal culture of Siberia.
