Exhibition on Kazan’s Home and Daily Life 100 Years Ago Opens in the Kazan Kremlin

The Museum of the History of Tatar Statehood and the Republic of Tatarstan has opened an exhibition titled “Kazan 100 Years Ago: Home Life and Daily Life.” Featuring items from the collection of the Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve, the exhibition offers a glimpse into how Kazan residents organized their home life just over a century ago.

Visitors can explore the interiors of middle-class and noble Kazan households, showcasing furniture from European and domestic manufacturers, fine porcelain, candelabras, mirrors, and factory-made textiles.

At that time, Kazan’s residents strove to keep up with modern innovations, equipping their homes with electric lighting, telephones, and indoor sinks. The atmosphere was enriched by musical chiming clocks, and photographs of friends and loved ones decorated the walls—except in Tatar urban homes, where displaying photographs openly was not customary.

National traditions remained an essential part of home life. In the inner quarters of Tatar households, especially in the women’s section, traditional chests, towels, and prayer rugs (namazlyks) were often preserved.
