Ilsur Metshin, who was re-elected today as the Mayor of Kazan, presented the city’s development concept for the next five years. He announced the “Greater Kazan” program at the first session of the fifth convocation of the Kazan City Duma.
“The hopes, ideas, and wishes of the people became the source of our election program, which reflects the new challenges facing Kazan,” Metshin said.
Among the directions is a utility upgrade, as the mayor put it. He noted that the housing and utilities sector suffers from “chronic underfunding,” which has led to a high level of wear and tear in utility networks. According to him, documentation for the reconstruction of the most hazardous sections has already been prepared. Another task is to create and implement a program to modernize residential buildings with gas water heaters.
Metshin emphasized that in his 20 years as mayor he has seen how “Kazan has literally spilled beyond its borders.” He spoke about the problem of pendulum migration, when more than 100,000 people come to the capital of Tatarstan every day for work. Hence another direction of the “Greater Kazan” program – the need to integrate suburban areas with Kazan within the framework of the Kazan urban agglomeration.
Metshin stated that work to improve the quality of the urban environment will continue. The city will carry on with the renovation of industrial zones, the development of public transport, and the implementation of the concept “Kazan – a city on water.”
A separate block of the “Greater Kazan” program is dedicated to ecology and sustainable urban development. The goal is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, to create conditions for separate waste collection, and to promote the recycling industry.
“We are responsible for the Kazan in which our children, grandchildren, and future generations of citizens will live,” the mayor of Kazan declared.
