Starting in October, parish mosque courses on the basics of Islam and religious upbringing will open across Tatarstan. In Kazan, 29 mosques will offer free classes for everyone interested.
The parish mosque program is designed for three years and has been approved by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan (SAM RT). The curriculum includes the following disciplines: “Morality”, “Aqeedah”, “Tajweed” – rules of Qur’an recitation, “Qur’an”, ‘Fiqh” – Islamic jurisprudence, “Seerah” – the life of the Prophet ﷺ), and “Introductory Course in Arabic”. In some communities, lessons also cover Hadith studies, Islamic history, the history of the Prophets, Old Tatar and modern Tatar languages, and more. Teachers also provide basic knowledge of life-cycle rituals (naming, nikah, janazah, etc.).
The unified textbook for the “Religious Upbringing” program in the parish mosque courses is the book Fundamentals of Islam. All topics concerning Aqeedah are taught in line with the Hanafi madhhab and the Maturidi creed. Classes are usually held on weekends, with schedules arranged to suit the preferences of the participants. Most courses offer separate instruction for men and women.
In addition, the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Tatarstan invites everyone to the “One-Day School.” These short-term courses on the basics of Islam, consisting of 8 lessons (one per week), will begin on October 4 in Kazan (at the SAM RT residence) and on October 5 in Almetyevsk (at the Central Mosque, 82A Marjani St.).
The Russian Islamic Institute is also launching courses called We Are Tatars! This is a unique opportunity to deepen one’s knowledge of Islam, learn the Tatar language, study the rules of Qur’an recitation, and explore Tatar history.
Another way to study the basics of Islam is through the Online Madrasa available in both Tatar and Russian. This free platform can be accessed via a website or a mobile app for iOS and Android. The app, called Online Madrasa, is available for download in the Play Market and App Store. Lessons can be studied anytime, anywhere, from any device with internet access (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.).
All courses are free of charge.
