Zakyat Charity Fund provided More than 150 families with over 4 tons of gushr

On the 4th day of the month of Rabi al-Akhir (September 26), the Zakyat Charity Fund of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan distributed another batch of gushr-sadaqah to those in need. Over 3 tons of vegetables were given to 100 low-income and large families, families raising children with disabilities, single-parent families, and elderly people living alone in Kazan.

In total, since the beginning of the gushr-sadaqah campaign in Tatarstan, the Zakyat Charity Fund of the SAM RT has provided more than 150 families with over 4 tons of food collected from Muslims in the Alekseevsky, Baltasinsky, Pestrechinsky, Kaibitsky, and Rybno-Slobodsky districts. Altogether, about 15 tons of vegetables are expected to be distributed during the campaign.

Gushr is a special type of almsgiving, when a Muslim is obliged to give one-tenth of their harvest to the needy. The food collection campaign for the poor has been conducted annually across all muhtasibats of the republic under the coordination of the SAM RT since 2017.

Anyone can contribute part of their harvest from household farms by bringing it to central mosques in towns and districts across the republic to help the needy. Mosques accept vegetables and fruits such as potatoes, cabbage, pumpkin, beetroot, carrots, onions, apples, plums, and more. The collected produce is then systematically distributed to low-income families.

In Kazan, the collection and distribution of gushr-sadaqah is handled by the Zakyat Charity Fund of the SAM RT. Residents of Kazan who wish to take part in this charitable initiative, or those who would like to receive food assistance through it, can contact the fund by phone: (843) 225-33-22. The collected produce is distributed to charitable organizations, social institutions, Muslim educational establishments (madrasahs, the Quran Hafiz Training Center, etc.), as well as directly to needy families.

The Zakyat Charity Fund maintains a registry of more than 1,000 needy families, including low-income households, large families, single-parent families, and families raising children with disabilities. All of them will receive food assistance under the gushr-sadaqah campaign.

Thanks to the active participation of Tatarstan residents, significant amounts of fruits and vegetables have been collected and distributed in different years:

  • 2017 — 160 tons

  • 2018 — 600 tons

  • 2019 — 1,109.5 tons

  • 2020 — about 1,000 tons

  • 2021 — 577.33 tons

  • 2022 — 1,377.34 tons

  • 2023 — about 827 tons
