The first monument to Rudolf Nureyev opened in Tatarstan

The monument to one of the major classical dancers of the twentieth century, Rudolf Nureyev, created  by sculptor Zurab Tseretel,  has been unveiled on Wednesday in Kazan It  became the first monument to the famous ballet dancer and choreographer, established in Russia.

“This is a people’s size; such people are born once in a hundred years. This is Rudolf Nureyev, a Tatar, his mother is from our lands, ”said Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov at the time of the opening of the monument.

Nureyev’s mother is from Tatarskoye Tyugulbaevo. Father – a native of the Bashkir village Asanovo. Childhood dancer passed in Ufa. During his lifetime he was called the “flying Tatar”.

The monument was erected near the Musa Jalil Opera and Ballet Theater. The monument of five meters in height depicts an artist in tights. Tsereteli captured the choreographer in a jump. Sculpture set on a pedestal in the form of a broken column.

“My word, my cry of the soul. This is a unique city, I have been many times,  and joyfully I worked, and joyfully I created. You have a good story, you need to raise it in the language of art, ”Tsereteli said while presenting his work to journalists.
