Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan and Chairman of the National Council of the World Congress of Tatars, Vasil Shaykhraziev, continues his working visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Today, the Tatarstan delegation visited the Din-Mukhammed Mosque in Petropavlovsk. They became acquainted with the mosque’s unique architecture and history, as it is one of the most important spiritual centers of the region.
The Din-Mukhammed Mosque is the oldest mosque in Petropavlovsk and one of the city’s main landmarks.
It is an architectural monument of the late 19th century, built in 1854 with funds donated by merchants Din-Mukhammed Bichurin and V. Yangurazov. The mosque was named in honor of one of its benefactors.
During the Soviet period, all madrasahs and mosques in Petropavlovsk were closed and liquidated. In the 1930s, the mosque building was used for non-religious purposes, and its minaret was completely dismantled. Only in 1996 was the mosque returned to the Tatar-Bashkir religious community. By that time, the building was almost completely destroyed, with only bare walls remaining. Soon after, the Tatars of Petropavlovsk undertook the reconstruction of the Din-Mukhammed Mosque, which was completed in 1998.
In 2001, the minaret was rebuilt. In 2013, the mosque came under the administration of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Today, the Din-Mukhammed Mosque is an active place of worship and one of the architectural monuments of the city of Petropavlovsk.
