Today, in honor of Eid al-Adha, the citywide family festival “Kurban Fest” will take place on the Kazan Embankment at the “Yelmay” children’s park. The event will bring together residents and guests of the capital of Tatarstan, regardless of age or religion.
The festival is organized by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Mukhtasibat of the Vakhitovsky and Privolzhsky districts of Kazan, with the support of the Foundation for the Support of Islamic Culture, Science, and Education.
The festival’s program is built around the concept “Kazan is…”, which reveals the city through faith, family, history, sports, generosity, labor, and taste. On the main stage, performers from theaters and philharmonic societies will appear, as well as Rifat Zaripov, Honored Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan. Out of respect for Muslim traditions, instrumental music is not used at the festival — instead, performances take place in a special a cappella format.
A new feature in this year’s program is a raffle of 5 sheep. Guests can win them at strength attractions, sports relays, and family competitions. The winner can either take the sheep home or hand it over to the organizers — in which case the animal will be slaughtered according to Sharia law, and the meat distributed to those in need.
Separate areas will be available for children. In the kids’ zone: a ten-meter-long coloring sheet, a tent with live butterflies, face painting, animators, relay races, and creative workshops. In celebration of the holiday, 2,000 children’s gifts will be distributed.
Along the embankment, an exhibition of military equipment will be set up with the participation of law enforcement agencies and patriotic clubs — the “Kazan is Heroes” zone. At the “Kazan is Sports” area, masterclasses and family starts will be held by Kazan sports clubs.
A zone for learning how to tie a headscarf will open for women and girls. All interested parties can learn the basics of performing prayer (namaz). On a separate stage, the G. Kariev Youth Theater will present a play about the celebration of Eid al-Adha in a Tatar family. Guests will also enjoy a lecture hall on family and spiritual-moral values, as well as over 100 masterclasses: calligraphy, clay modeling, and wood painting.
The festival grounds will feature a fair-market with products from local brands and artisans: books, textiles, leather goods, jewelry, items with Islamic symbols — over 100 offerings. An open-air halal food court with national cuisine dishes will also be operating.
The citywide family festival “Kurban Fest” will take place on May 27 at the “Yelmay” children’s park (Kazan Embankment). It starts at 1:00 PM and ends at 5:00 PM. Admission is free.
