From April 24 to 26, the global educational event “Tatarcha diktant” will take place worldwide, aimed at testing the level of literacy in the Tatar language and promoting the native language. This large-scale event unites thousands of people who care about the Tatar language: schoolchildren, students, teachers, scientists, cultural and educational figures, journalists, creative individuals, as well as representatives of other nationalities who study the Tatar language and treat it with respect. The event is voluntary and free of charge, held simultaneously for all comers in various cities across Russia and the world. Anyone can participate, regardless of age, gender, education, religious affiliation, profession, marital status, or interests.
This year, the event will be held for the eleventh time and will be dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of the great Tatar poet Gabdulla Tukay. His work has had a huge influence on the development of the Tatar language, literature, and the national identity of the people.
The project is implemented in accordance with the State Program of the Republic of Tatarstan “Preservation of the National Identity of the Tatar People,” approved by Resolution No. 730 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan dated August 25, 2020, and is aimed at fulfilling the objective of “Preservation and development of the native language, culture, and traditions of the Tatar people” (Section IV).
The “Tatarcha diktant” was first held in 2016 on the initiative of the World Forum of Tatar Youth and creative Tatar activists. The main goal of the event is to preserve and promote the Tatar language among the general public, increase literacy levels, spark interest in learning the Tatar language, and strengthen the national identity and cultural uniqueness of the Tatar people.
While in the first years the event was held only in Tatarstan and a few regions, in recent years it has turned into a major project that unites Tatars living in the Republic of Tatarstan, regions of the Russian Federation, and abroad. In recent years, the event has significantly expanded its geographical boundaries. Today, the event takes place with the participation of compatriots living in 26 countries and 73 regions of the Russian Federation. All districts of the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as universities, schools, and various organizations of the city of Kazan, are making great efforts to attract as wide an audience as possible to this event, so that everyone who wishes can test their knowledge of the Tatar language and become acquainted with their native culture. The number of participants grows every year: thousands of people test their level of Tatar language knowledge both at physical venues and online.
The event provides for participation at the following levels:
-
Beginner level of Tatar language proficiency
-
Intermediate level of Tatar language proficiency
-
Advanced level of Tatar language proficiency
This structure allows each participant to take a test that matches their language proficiency level.
